What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job – a paid job.

You work for an employer, learning skills and knowledge and usually spend a day each week with a college or a training provider to get the qualifications you need for the job.

Here are the facts:

  • You get trained by a training provider
  • You get qualifications for the job and experience of going the job
  • You are paid
  • You learn the skills that employers really want for example,
    • Learning to talk to people
    • Learning to work as part of a team and
    • Learning how to solve problems
  • Apprenticeships usually take between one and four years to finish depending on the level of apprenticeship and what apprenticeship you are doing
  • The minimum wage you will receive from April 2018 is £3.70 per hour, but many of you will earn more than this.

  • You study maths and English (unless you have GCSEs at the required grades) and learn technical knowledge

  1. Higher Level Apprenticeships

  • Higher level Apprenticeships are available in areas such as accountancy, law, engineering, IT, business management, care and enterprise.

  • They tend to last up to four years and are a way of getting a degree without getting into student debt.
